Onion Skin Eggs

eggs

  1. Bring eggs to room temperature.
  2. Collect leaves, ferns, herbs, etc. from your yard.  I put them in a container with some water to keep them moist.
  3. Place plant leaf on side of egg with the back of the leaf against the egg.  Then wrap tightly with piece of panty hose.  Use a twisty tie to tie in the back.
  4. Add onion skins and 1/2 C apple cider vinegar
  5. Place in pot, fill pot to cover the eggs with water.
  6. Bring to a simmer, and simmer for 6 hours.  It seems to be best to stir occasionally (maybe every hour or so).  The longer the eggs are simmered, the darker the color.
  7. Drain water, and once the eggs cool enough to work with, remove the wrappings.

I have noticed that if the panty hose is not pulled tightly when tied, the design of the leaf is not quite as clear.  I have also noticed that using ‘fleshy’ leaves doesn’t work very well.  An example of this would be a dandelion leaf.  It is thicker than a thin clover.  The design is not as distinct once finished.  I believe both red cabbage and beets can work to dye eggs and will give you a different color.  Small ferns and clovers make gorgeous designs on these eggs!
