Multitasking: How to Save Time and Cut Back on Kitchen Waste
How many times have you used half of an onion and put it in the fridge, only to find it two weeks later and have to throw it out?
Or, have you had a little too much fresh spinach or kale, and it started to rot before you were able to eat it all?
Or, have you planned a dinner, only to have something come up and not be able to make that meal, and you leave fresh veggies to spoil?
What has helped me to eliminate this type of food waste is to get into the habit of freezing things. For example, if I chop up an onion and only need part of it, I chop the whole thing and freeze the rest. I often have a jar of onions in the freezer partially full.
When I wash a package of celery, it is very easy to rinse off the leaves as well. Then I chop them up, put them in a jar, and freeze them.
I also do this with spinach, peppers and even carrots.
Obviously you won’t want to add your frozen veggies to a salad, but it makes a great addition to soups, stir fries and just about anything you would cook.
Besides not wasting food, I really like when I need a cup of onions, and I have it chopped and ready for me to use waiting in my freezer! Like anything new, once you do this a few times, you will make a habit of it.
While you will save yourself time at a later date, you will also cut back on wasting fresh produce!
